The aluminum cost wasn't more expensive after considering the cost of the plywood, glue, SS bolts/screws, epoxy resin, paint and marine sealant. The REAL problem with aluminum is the price/cost of hiring a welder. To do the transom correctly, the aluminum certified welder/fabricator is going to charge $50.00 an hour.
I used the 1 1/2 inch coosa board to rebuild the transom on my 17' lund. The board really made the job go quicker because I didn't have to bother with glueing plywood to gather to make the new trasom board. I used oak when repairing my transom - two 1" pieces glued together. Then I predrilled holes through that, the aluminum, and another 1" piece of oak on the inside of the boat. All secured with stainless steel. I didn't like how the two pieces of plywood I replaced looked - all rotted and brittle.

Today we removed the old transom from our 21 ft. 1985 starcraft aluminum- hulled boat. The wood was starting to rot. When we extracted the transom we found that it was of 1 5/8" plywood ( marine?), 12 inches high by about 70 inches long.

First up, is a customer who replaced his boat’s transom board with Richlite. The original wood transom support board on this customer’s boat had rotted and weathered over time. It was not structurally strong and needed to be replaced.
